Intro to A Security Mentality
Warning: Operating this device without proper training can be dangerous!

I spent 15 years working for a large public utility. Drilled into us over and over again was the phrase "Safety is our number one concern.'

I can't say that they lived up to that phrase, but it definitely had an impact on me, and I have passed it on to my children.

Before the car is put into gear EVERYBODY in the car has a seatbelt on. Before power tools are used safety glasses and other appropriate equipment is put on. When I saw my 15 year old son stop as he was about to turn on the wire wheel to clean some pipe and grab his safety glasses and gloves I knew it had become ingrained. I was quite happy and quite proud!

We have, in short, developed a "Safety Mentality" in this house. It did not happen overnight and it doesn't mean we have never gotten hurt. I can honestly say it saved my life (more on that another time). After all, if you are going to operate something dangerous you should think about protecting yourself, right?

I suggest that you look at the screen in front of you, the keyboard, and that lovely little box you call your computer and think the following: This is a dangerous object.

Every time you sit at your computer and go on the Internet, check your E-Mail, or place some CD or Diskette into your computer you are putting yourself at risk. The best case scenario is nothing will happen. Happily, that is probably the norm. But you have to learn to think about that box as something more than a source of entertainment and pleasure, because it's when you are not prepared that you can get hurt the worst.

So, sign up for our newsletters. We will help you to protect yourself, your family, your job and, or course, that lovely little box, your computer.
